Thanksgiving Eve Baking

Standard

Preparing for Thanksgiving, I’m sure everyone has been slaving in the kitchen (or at least over their Pinterest recipe boards like me).

My mom and I wanted to have a baking party, so we ventured out to try some new recipes we found on Pinterest. We started out with a cinnamon roll pie crust for our apple pie.

Start with a pre-made pillsbury pie crust. Roll it out and spread melted butter and cinnamon sugar over the whole crust. Roll the crust up, and slice it into thin mini “cinnamon rolls”.

After you have sliced them, press them into the bottom of a pie pan.

We then filled the crust with our favorite apple pie filling.

8 apples, sliced.
Mix 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 2 tablespoon cinnamon in a separate bowl.
Pour over sliced apples and mix well.
Fill crust with apple pie filling.

Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.
ENJOY!!

Friday Night Family Dinner

Standard

I decided to try out recipes I found on Pinterest to make for my whole family on Friday…

First was the Balsamic Seasoned Meat. It included 1/4 c. balsamic vinegar, 1 T. Worcestershire sauce, 2 tsp. dark brown sugar, 1 garlic clove minced, 1 lb. tri-tip, salt and pepper. Marinate in a ziplock bag for 30 minutes. Then cook the meat at 350 for about 20 minutes. I tripled the recipe for 9 people. It was so good and everyone loved it!

I then made Crispy potatoes. 3 T. unsalted butter (melted), 3 T. extra virgin olive oil, 4 lbs. russet potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced), 4 shallots sliced, salt. Combine butter and oil and brush on bottom of 9 in. baking dish. Arrange potatoes vertically in dish and wedge shallots throughout. Sprinkle with salt and pour on remaining butter mixture. Bake at 375 for about 1- 1 1/2 hours. You are not supposed to turn or stir the potatoes, but I was nervous that they would burn… so I did. They turned out great and everyone went back for seconds!

   (The full meal!)

And for dessert I made Diet Coke Brownies. The Diet Coke substitutes for the eggs and oil from the mix, making them low in calories. Basically you just get a box of any brownie mix and add 1 can of Diet Coke, mixing to incorporate. It is very runny and thin. Pour this into a 9 by 13 in. pan that has been coated with non-stick spray. Bake according to package directions for about 35-40 minutes. Well… they turned out flat and very wet on the bottom. They were a little rubbery. I will definitely NOT be making these again!      Here is a picture of me trying to make them look appetizing…….

Tasty meals can come from the internet, and it’s always interesting to experiment… even if they don’t turn out.

DIY Family Sign

Standard

I have had this shadow box laying around for years now and have at least 3 other ideas on how to use it.  I finally got around to one.  I was inspired by a cute frame I saw on Pinterest.

So here is what I did….

Had the frame and picture already.  Went to Michaels for the letters.

The R was already black, the other letters I painted a yellow and did a brown wash over them to give them an old rustic look.

Painted the sides of the shadow box.

Picked out some scrapbook paper.  I cut out a rectangle to give the picture a framed look.

Glued down picture, paper in the box and on the rim.

Then hot glued letters in the box and put a mat decoupage finish over everything.  Glued on R to the rim.

And then enjoyed!

Skinny Jean Craziness

Standard

I hate having to buy new jeans. It seems like right when I get the right kind of jeans, the style changes and I’m already stuck in yesterday. Since skinny jeans have been in style for a few years now, I figured I might as well catch up to the times and bring my bootcuts into this decade.

It was really quite simple!

1. Get a pair of already skinny jeans that you like, turn them inside out.

2. Get your old boot cuts and turn them inside out.

3. Lay the skinny jeans on top of the boot cuts and trace along the edge with chalk so you know where to put your seam.

4. Sew a regular seam about 1/2 in. inside the chalk line.

5. Turn them right side out and try them on to make sure you like the fit.

6. Turn them back inside out and cut with fabric scissors along the seam (but not too close).

7. Iron the seam flat, and voila! Your jeans are now skinny!!
